Goethe vs telc: Which German Exam Should You Take?
Goethe-Zertifikat and telc Deutsch are both recognised German certificates, but they differ in format, scoring, price and recognition. Here is how to choose.
Both Goethe-Zertifikat and telc Deutsch certify CEFR levels A1 to C2, and both are accepted by German authorities for residence and naturalisation at the relevant level. The differences are practical, not about prestige.
Recognition
Goethe-Institut is Germany''s official cultural institute, and its certificates are the most widely recognised internationally, including by many universities abroad. telc is recognised across Germany and the EU, and telc Deutsch B1 and the "Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer" are standard for integration and naturalisation cases.
Format and scoring
- Goethe B1 and telc B1 both use four modules; Goethe B1 lets you take and retake single modules separately, which telc generally does not at the same flexibility.
- telc papers often feel more workplace and everyday-administration focused; Goethe papers lean slightly more general and international.
- Pass marks sit at 60 percent for both at B1, but the point distribution per part differs, so practise with the format you have booked.
Price and availability
telc exams are often cheaper and offered by many local adult-education centres, which usually means more exam dates near you. Goethe exams are run by Goethe-Institut and its partners, with fewer dates but a globally consistent standard.
How to choose
- Applying for residence, naturalisation or a job inside Germany: either works; take whichever has the earlier date nearby, usually telc.
- Applying to a university or employer outside Germany: Goethe-Zertifikat is the safer signal.
- You want to retake only one weak module: Goethe B1 module retakes are the friendlier option.
Preparation is largely transferable
